Biodiversity of Holocene marine fish of the southeast coast of Brazil Biota Neotropica
Mendes,Augusto Barros; Duarte,Michelle Rezende; Silva,Edson Pereira.
Abstract Middens are archaeological sites dating between 8,000 and 1,000 years before present and are commonly found on the Brazilian coast. Data were collected from 68 middens allowing an inventory of 142 fish species, most of them recorded in no more than five sites. Conversely, Micropogonias furnieri and Pogonias cromis had the highest frequencies of occurrence. The biogeographic, ecological and economic data showed that most of the identified fish are widely distributed in the Western Atlantic (59.72%) and inhabit estuarine environments (53.99%), while most species have a demersal habit (35.92%) and exhibit oceanic migratory behaviour (28.87%). Lastly, the surveyed fish are predominantly carnivorous (72.54%) with some commercial value (96.48%)....

Bony fishes (Teleostei) caught by small-scale fisheries off central to south coast of São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Motta,Fabio Santos; Rosa,Marcos Rogério; Namora,Rafael Cabrera; Gadig,Otto Bismarck Fazzano.
Small-scale fisheries have a great socioeconomic importance in Brazil. Different regional characteristics along the coast, mostly related to landing sites, equipment used, and targeted species, renders its assessment and monitoring difficult. The aim of this paper is to present a list of species of bony fishes (Teleostei) caught by artisanal fisheries along the São Paulo coast, southeastern Brazil and to provide comments on the relative abundance and conservation status of those species. A total of 315 fishing fleet landings were surveyed, and 106 species distributed among 38 families were recorded. Sciaenidae and Carangidae were the most frequent families in species number. The southern king weakfish, Macrodon atricauda, was the most abundant species,...

Checklist of marine demersal fishes captured by the pair trawl fisheries in Southern (RJ-SC) Brazil Biota Neotropica
Rotundo,Matheus Marcos; Severino-Rodrigues,Evandro; Barrella,Walter; Petrere Junior,Miguel; Ramires,Milena.
Abstract: Demersal fishery resources are abundant on continental shelves, on the tropical and subtropical coasts, making up a significant part of the marine environment. Marine demersal fishery resources are captured by various fishing methods, often unsustainably, which has led to the depletion of their stocks. In order to inventory the marine demersal ichthyofauna on the Southern Brazilian coast, as well as their conservation status and distribution, this study analyzed the composition and frequency of occurrence of fish captured by pair trawling in 117 fishery fleet landings based in the State of São Paulo between 2005 and 2012. The ichthyofauna consisted of 245 species (81 families, 32 orders and 2 classes). Among the species, 50 species were...

Benedito Cecilio,Evanilde; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Júlio Jr,Horácio Ferreira; Pavanelli,Carla Simone.
Samples were taken from November 1983 to October 1989 in sites along the main body of the Itaipu reservoir and its area of influence to evaluate the impacts of this reservoir on ichthyofauna and to provide information about the colonization process in the dammed area. The ichthyofaunistic similarity between the sites was analysed during the studied period. Spatial and temporal variations of the ichthyofaunistic diversity were also done, using Shannon-Winer Index of Diversity, eveness and species richness, comparing the results with those obtained before the damming. After Itaipu Reservoir formation, it was observed significative alteration in specific abundance and ichthyofauna structure of the Paraná River, with an increase in species number in ali...

Commercial fish assemblages on New Caledonian fringing reefs submitted to different levels of ground erosion ArchiMer
Letourneur, Y; Labrosse, Pierre; Kulbicki, M.
A comparative study was conducted in two zones of the Northern Province of New Caledonia, one located windward (east coast) and the other located leeward (west coast). In each zone, three major sectors were investigated: fringing reefs close to areas of important mining activities, fringing reefs close to areas of moderate mining activities, and fringing reefs close to areas free of mining activities. In addition, on the west coast, fringing reefs close to areas of high natural ground erosion were also studied. Only commercial fish species sensus late were censused on a total of 163 stations, concerning 165 fish species. Substrate characteristics were not different between zones and sectors. However, significant differences were observed for living...

Andreata,José V.; Meurer,Bruno C.; Baptista,Maurício G.S.; Manzano,Felipe V.; Teixeira,Dirceu E.; Longo,Michele M.; Freret,Natalie V..
The ichthyofauna composition of the Baía da Ribeira was analyzed between December 1998 and November2001. The instruments used were an otter-trawl net, beach seines, cast net and visual census. It was registered two classes, composed by 16 orders, 59 families and 148 species. The high wealth of the region is due to the great diversity of environments and its location at the north limit of Argentine an Zoogeographic Province. The instruments diversification, the samples regions and the long sampling period were the responsables to the great numbers of collected species in comparison to some others studies at the same area.

Composition and assemblage structure of demersal fish from São Cristóvão beach, Areia Branca, RN Biota Neotropica
Dantas,Natália Carla Fernandes de Medeiros; Feitosa,Caroline Vieira; Araújo,Maria Elisabeth de.
Fish assemblages are an important element of sandy beaches, as they are fundamental for these ecosystems' balance of energy. Descriptions of the structure of fish assemblages in the sandy beaches of northeastern Brazil are scarce; this is especially true for the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which northern coast is poorly studied. This study aimed to identify the fish fauna of São Cristóvão Beach and to determine their assemblage structure. Three trawlings, considered as replicates, were undertaken monthly, in the same day, during 10 minutes each time, parallel to the coastal line, and in the direction of current, from February 2010 to January 2011. To describe the general pattern of the fish assemblage, the abundance, frequency and trophic categories of...

Contribution of different mesohabitats to the maintenance of fish richness and diversity in the lower Preto River Biological Sciences
Zeni, Jaquelini Oliveira; Santos, Ana Cláudia; Carvalho, Fernando Rogério.
The presence of different mesohabitats in freshwater systems can support higher local and regional fish richness. Thus, their suppression by dam-building represents a real threat to aquatic biodiversity. Our aims were: (1) to survey the fish fauna in two different mesohabitats in lower Preto River: a riffle indirectly threatened by dam-building and a run with different physical structure; and (2) to analyze and compare the fish community structure in these different mesohabitats. Six samplings were made during one year in two reaches (R1 and R2). We conducted a ‘one way’ ANOSIM to assess the differences in fish community structure between R1 and R2. Fifty-three species were recorded, with the occurrence of Aphyocheirodon hemigrammus and Myleus tiete, two...

Contribution to the knowledge of the coastal marine fishes of São Tomé Island (Gulf of Guinea) OceanDocs
Porteiro, F.M.; Barreiros, J.P.; Afonso, P.; Santos, R.S.; Worms, J.; Wirtz, P..
Little is known about the ichthyofauna of the São Tomé and Príncipe archipelago. Since the early works of Osório, at the turn of the century, only few attempts were made to update and complete existing knowledge on fish systematics and biodiversity from this area. Over the past few years, however, several surveys made it possible to start an inventory of the coastal fishes for the archipelago. These are mainly based on specimens that where captured or observed whilst diving and also on fishes landed on beaches by local artisanal fishermen. A total of 124 species belonging to 108 genera and 61 families was identified. Some specimens, including Serranidae, Gobiidae and Labridae probably belong to undescribed species and are currently being studied.

Distribution of Siluriformes in a river under the influence of a small hydroelectric power plant of the Paraná River Basin, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Garcia,Thiago D.; Ota,Renata R.; Ferreira,Dhiego G.; Nascimento,Raul H. C.; Galindo,Bruno A.; Pereira,Larissa S.; Zanatta,Augusto S..
ABSTRACT When a river is dammed, impacts differ according to distance from the dam under consideration, and sites closer to the dam are more affected than distant ones. Damming a river changes the flow and landscape characteristics, which, in turn, change the hydrological, limnological and ecological dynamics, such as biological production, species distribution, and ecosystem structuring, functioning and services. This study evaluates the distribution pattern of the Siluriformes (catfish) fish species near a small hydroelectric power plant in the Jaguariaíva River, considering three distinct distances from the dam: upstream region, reservoir and downstream region. Samples were taken with gillnets between March 2013 and December 2014. The abundance and...

Diversidade da ictiofauna de poças de maré da praia do Cabo Branco, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil Zoologia
Rosa,Ricardo S; Rosa,Ierecê L; Rocha,Luiz A.
A survey of the tidal pool fish community was carried out between february/1987 and january/1988, at Cabo Branco Beach, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Specimens were collected monthly at low tide, using rotenone. A total of 3143 specimens was obtained. The most speciose families were Ophichthidae (14% of the total number of species), Mugilidae (11%) and Muraenidae (9%), and the most representative ones in number of individuais were Gobiidae (48%), Pomacentridae (13%) and Labrisomidae (10%). The main resident species were Bathygobius soporator (Valenciennes, 1837) and Abudefduf saxalilis (Linnaeus, 1758). The presence of a large number of juveniles in the pools indicated the importance of the studied sites as nursery áreas for several fish species.

Ecologia da ictiofauna de um córrego de cabeceira da bacia do alto rio Paraná, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lemes,Elis Mara; Garutti,Valdener.
Ecological studies were conducted in the ichthyofauna of Cedro, a small headwater stream located in a degraded area of State of São Paulo, Brazil, situated in the upper Paraná River basin. These are the results of two non-consecutive years observations and collections in two biotopes of that stream: a pool and a rapid. The ecological characteristics studied change in space and time. The present richness of species is high (21 species), nine of which are constant, six accessory and six accidental. The diversity is low (0.69 to 2.38), and the numeric predominance, from one to three species, occurred in both biotopes. The most frequent species are Poecilia reticulata (Peters, 1859) (28.1%), Corydoras cf. aeneus (Gill, 1858) (20.3%) and Hypostomus cf....

Ecomorphology and use of food resources: inter- and intraspecific relationships of fish fauna associated with macrophyte stands Neotropical Ichthyology
Prado,Aline V. R.; Goulart,Erivelto; Pagotto,João P. A..
ABSTRACT Based on the form-function interaction and its consequence to niche exploitation by fish species, the study aimed to identify ecomorphological patterns and to investigate the possibility of explaining the trophic niche breadth using the pattern of intraspecific ecomorphological diversity. We tested the following hypotheses: i) the morphology explains variations in diet among fish species; ii) the intraspecific ecomorphological diversity is related to the breadth of the trophic niche explored by the species, so that species that feed on a wider range of resources have greater variation in body shape compared to those specialized in resource consumption. Fish were collected in stands of the aquatic macrophytes Eichhornia azurea and Eichhornia...

Effects of abiotic variables on the distribution of fish assemblages in streams with different anthropogenic activities in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Daga,Vanessa Salete; Gubiani,Éder André; Cunico,Almir Manoel; Baumgartner,Gilmar.
Studies on fish assemblages in streams point out, that understanding the relationship between species and their environment is crucial for conservation. The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of changes in abiotic variables on the composition and structure of fish assemblages in Neotropical urban streams from southern Brazil with different levels of urbanization. The composition and structure of fish assemblages showed significant differences along the urbanization gradient observed in the streams. Tolerant and non-native species were found in more urbanized sites. A matrix correlation revealed a relationship between abiotic variables and the spatial pattern of structure and composition of fish assemblages. Abiotic variables, such as total...

Effects of deforestation on headwater stream fish assemblages in the Upper Xingu River Basin, Southeastern Amazonia Neotropical Ichthyology
Ilha,Paulo; Rosso,Sergio; Schiesari,Luis.
ABSTRACT The expansion of the Amazonian agricultural frontier represents the most extensive land cover change in the world, detrimentally affecting stream ecosystems which collectively harbor the greatest diversity of freshwater fish on the planet. Our goal was to test the hypotheses that deforestation affects the abundance, richness, and taxonomic structure of headwater stream fish assemblages in the Upper Xingu River Basin, in Southeastern Amazonia. Standardized sampling surveys in replicated first order streams demonstrated that deforestation strongly influences fish assemblage structure. Deforested stream reaches had twice the fish abundance than reference stream reaches in primary forests. These differences in assemblage structure were largely driven...
